What is a Product Specialist?

Product specialists monitor all aspects of a product lifestyle, including their long- and short-term development and marketing. They stay apprised of marketplace trends to ensure the product has a competitive position. Product specialists interface with project managers and clients to determine a product's future direction. Product specialists collaborate with team members to ensure excellent product delivery. They are experts in a product or series of products and develop sales, price, and profitability strategies, recommend improvements, increase revenue, and identify opportunities.

Product specialists conduct extensive market research including surveys, desktop research, phone calls, or attending rival product launches. They answer product related questions politely and address inquiries promptly. They attend workshops and refresher courses in sales and marketing and assist with new product releases and events. Product specialists also perform demonstrations for customers, staff, and other stakeholders and help develop business plans. They schedule training sessions and attend meetings as required, and identify potential opportunities in the market for relaying information to the essential parties. Responsibilities for Product Specialist

  • Work with suppliers, customers and other supply chain participants to foster product safety management and information exchange along the supply chain, commensurate with risk.
  • Ensure high-quality products are available in our prepared foods area.
  • Ensure shelves are clean, maintain temperature control, verify expiration dates, and dispose of lesser-quality food products.
  • Maintain up-to date knowledge of product specifications related to prepared food merchandise, collaborate with cross functional teams and help educate other associates on tools, tasks and resources, communicate effectively with the members of the team, and be flexible to the needs of the business to work in other areas.
  • Complete work assignments and priorities by using policies, data, and resources, collaborate with managers, co-workers, customers, and other business partners, identify priorities, deadlines, and expectations, carry out tasks, communicate progress and information, determine and recommend ways to address improvement opportunities, and adapt to and learning from change, difficulties, and feedback.
  • Responsible for shipping orders, final inspection, and packaging of ordered items.
  • Execute day-to-day operational activities to support financial and customer experience goals including opening and closing if needed.
  • Develop business plans and product positioning in the marketplace.
  • Support assigned product(s) or have complete responsibility for product line(s).
  • Develop new product value propositions and targeted feature sets.
  • Assist in preliminary testing data collection (pre-test) as dictated by business needs.
  • Coordinate with operations for transaction set-up, activity and reporting.
  • Participate in routine client calls to existing and new customers of agency and trust.
  • Evaluate, prioritize and lead decision making regarding new products and marketing opportunities.
  • Be recognized internally as 'the go-to person' for the most complex product strategy assignments.

Qualifications for Product Specialist

  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, packaging science, pharmacy science or material sciences, or science Degree and equivalent experience.
  • Committed to product knowledge and can demonstrate mastery of materials.
  • An eye on continuous improvement and attention to detail
  • Comfortable with negotiation and decision making.
  • A willingness to continue to develop and foster product pipelines.
