Modification means changing the properties of a material. For example, we add trace amounts of boron and arsenic to make silicon more conductive, or combine it with oxygen to make silicon dioxide, a good insulator. Other techniques can modify a wide range of physical, electrical, and optical properties to improve chip performance, including heating, cooling, exposure to light, pressure, and high-energy injection.
Imagine a soccer pitch where every blade of grass must be cut to the same height, all within the thickness of a human hair. (Did you know that the width of a human hair is about 100 microns?) This is equivalent to what Applied's Centris™ Sym3™ does daily. The Sym3 controls material removal to within a few atomic layers across the entire 300mm silicon wafer, and nothing else comes close.

Wonder how the anti-counterfeiting features of modern currency are made? Those features are rapidly built up in many precisely applied, thin layers by Applied’s TopBeam, which uses high-powered electron beam evaporation in a vacuum coating process.
Components that can be bent to fit around corners and in small spaces have many potential uses. Our web coating systems can deposit 10 nanometer films on flexible substrates at high speeds: 20 meters/second, the equivalent of a car travelling over 70 KPH.
